I used the standard wool blend felt and embroidery floss for this. To add a bit of pizazz, I went around the entire border with a teeny tiny white back stitch. I think it makes the beet pop!
And since we're on the topic of veggies, I think it's time for me to come clean about a recent lifestyle choice I've made.
I haven't eaten meat for 6 months but I kept thinking that I'd wake up one morning and crave a hamburger so I was afraid to label myself as a vegetarian. When I would order tofu and get the inevitable question from friends, I'd just answer by saying, "No, I'm not a vegetarian. I just don't eat meat."
Well, I've been happily meat free for half a year so it's time to officially confess...I am, among many other things, a vegetarian.
My reasons for not eating meat are personal and would probably sound silly to most :). I'm happy to share and discuss if anyone is interested but I won't bore the rest of you with it. I will, however, answer a few of the frequently asked questions I usually get from friends and family.
How do you feel?
I feel great!! I have just as much, if not more, energy than I did before giving up meat. I feel healthier inside and out.
How do you get protein?
I'm not a vegan so I still eat protein rich eggs and cheese. I also get protein from tofu, tempeh, beans, meat substitutes, quinoa and other whole grains. Oh and peanut butter!! I love peanut butter.
Does your husband still eat meat?
He does and we do keep meat in the house for him but he's been very supportive of my choices. He's been open to trying some adventurous new veggie recipes and even takes me out to vegetarian restaurants.
Do you care if other people eat meat around you?
Not at all. As mentioned above, my choice is all about me :). What others decide to eat or not eat isn't any of my business.
Do you miss bacon?
It might be hard to believe this but I don't miss bacon. I was always really picky about bacon, probably partially because I raised a baby piglet named Elizabeth when I was a kid. I guess I sort of have a Charlotte's Web thing going on.
Will you ever eat meat again?
I'm not sure about this one. If I ever really want to eat a big steak again, I will. For now, I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything or depriving myself in any way.
So there it is, my beet and my veggie confessional! Thanks for listening.
